Last Day in Budapest

We had an amazing last day in Budapest getting up early to visit some sights before heading to Translyvania in the afternoon. First we stopped along the edges of the Danube to visit the "Shoes on the Danube", one of Budapest's most moving memorials. During the winter of 1944, Jews were rounded up from the ghetto by the ruling Arrow Cross Party. They made them strip naked, and face the river, while they were shot them at close range causimg them fall into the Danube and be washed away. This was a common practice during 1944-1945. In 2005, the shoes were erected in honor of these victims.

On a lighter note, we crossed the Chain Bridge into Buda, and took the funicular up to the Castle District. We walked around the Royal Palace and enjoyed great views along the castle wall. This place was vastly improved since I last visited with Beth in 1982, and with Robert in 1993!

Our highlight was a visit to Matyas (Matthias) Church. Named after King Matyas Corvinus, one of the greatest Hungarian rules, this church survived Ottoman rule, destructions and fires, and is an excellent example of Neo-Gothic style. We were able to visit just before they closed it for a wedding and also while the organ was still performing s service. Very moving experience.

Then we were off to Transylvania. More on that in the next blog!

View going up the funicular. It goes really fast on the way up and 20 minutes of steps to walk down!
Another view of the Chain Bridge with St Stephen'S Church behind.
